Aim & background:

  This in vitro study was designed to compare enamel demineralization depth adjacent to bands cemented with zinc polycarboxylate, glass ionomer(GI) and resine-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) cements, for evaluating their cariopreventive potential.
Methods:

  Seventy fully developed extracted third molars were randomly divided into 4 groups: 3 test groups each containing 20 samples and 1 control group containing 10 samples. 1 to 3 Sample groups were cemented with zinc polycarboxylate, GI and RMGI cements, respectively. All groups were demineralized under White method and immersed in a 10% solution of methylene blue. The mean depth of dye penetration was assessed up to 0.1 millimeter, reflected depth of enamel demineralization. 1 way Anova and LSD statistical tests identify significant differences for dye penetration between groups.
Results: the highest demineralization depth was seen in control group. There was less dye penetration in decreasing order with zinc polycarboxylate and GI, and the least was related to RMGI. All differences were significant.
